6 Ways to Save Your Vision

April 09, 2014

Your eyes are extremely important and you need to keep them as healthy as possible for as long as you can. Everyone's eyesight changes over time due to aging, genetics, and other issues, but you can do as much as you can to make sure your eyes remain as healthy as possible. These are just a few of the helpful things that you can do to make sure your vision stays as good as possible and your eyes remain healthy:

See your eye doctor regularly. Your eye doctor is the only one who can truly make sure that you have no health issues with your eyes. He or she is the only one that can treat any problems that may have arisen since your last appointment. You may not think that anything is wrong with your eyes and think that you can skip an appointment, but not all eye problems exhibit symptoms in the beginning. Do not take the chance. See your eye doctor regularly.

Call your eye doctor right away if you begin experiencing problems. Problems such as blurred vision, headaches, and anything out of the ordinary with your vision should be addressed with your doctor. If your room is full of light and you still cannot see properly, you need to see your doctor. You may need new prescription lenses and to be checked for other eye health problems. Follow your doctor's advice regarding any issues that may have arisen due to your eye problems.

Wear your prescription glasses or contacts when you are supposed to wear them. Not wearing your prescription lenses may make you feel ill with headaches or with vision problems. You were given a prescription for glasses and contact lenses for a reason. Wear them without fail. It is the only way that you will be able to see properly without straining your eyes. Never strain your eyes. Always make sure you have enough light to see in addition to wearing your glasses.

Eat a healthy and balanced diet. Your eyes and brain need certain nutrients in order to function correctly. Make sure you are getting your fill of healthy fruits and vegetables in order to support healthy vision. You may need to speak to your doctor about taking supplements if you feel that you do not get enough vitamins and minerals just by eating alone. Your doctor can tell you whether this is right for you to do or not.

Shield your eyes from the sun and blinding snow. Your eyes are exposed to unhealthy UV rays from the sun and could even be burned by blinding items like the sun and snow. Wear protective eyewear anytime you have to be outside in the bright sun or in bright snow. If you wear glasses, consider wearing clip-on shades or purchasing prescription sunglasses that block harmful UV rays from the sun. There is no excuse not to protect your eyes.

Never put anything into your eyes that are not approved for ophthalmic use. Shield your eyes from harmful soaps, perfumes, and hair products. Always check the labels on eye drops and other eye products to make sure you are using them properly. If you ever get anything into your eyes that does not belong there, flush your eyes out with water right away and call a poison control center or your doctor right away.

Taking good care of your eyes is one of the best things that you can do for yourself. As long as you are good to your eyes and see your eye doctor regularly, your eyes should be at their best for many years to come. Do not hesitate to contact your eye doctor about any concerning issues you may be having with your eyes. The sooner you are seen, the sooner your problem can be treated or corrected.
