Getting an Eye Exam

February 14, 2014

Eye examinations can be a scary prospect for those unfamiliar to the process, and for individuals who have already been through exams, whether they require corrective lenses or not. For many people it can be hard to understand the need for follow up examinations at all. But initial and ongoing exams are essential to monitor vision and eye functionality, ensuring eye health. The American Optometric Association recommends that most people be evaluated every one to three years depending on age and additional environmental and health risk factors. Systematic medications, exposure to UV light, and smoking are all considered risk factors. Eye exams are important even for individuals who do not have vision problems. Detecting and treating eye health issues early can prevent loss of vision.

Optometry is a highly specialized field. Because of this it is important for people to understand what an eye examination entails exactly, and why certain elements of eye exams are so important. Eye care professionals, in this day in age, often use computer systems and advanced equipment to help them best discover the needs of their patients. These diagnostic tools can help analyze the data collected by an optometrist conducting eye exams. Things like checking peripheral vision are made easy for eye care professionals with the use of new technology. Peripheral vision is the part of vision that extends outside the direct line of view. Loss of peripheral vision is called tunnel vision and can impair things such as driving ability. So, for eye care specialists to be able to quickly determine issues like this with the help of these systems, they can consistently offer faster and more complete eye examinations.

During a routine eye examination a patient could expect to be evaluated for many things including refractive errors of the eye such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, and presbyopia. This is to determine whether or not corrective lenses are needed, and if they are, what type of lenses would be best suited. Another test given is for color vision deficiency. Some simple tests are conducted that will evaluate a patients ability to see the full color spectrum and determine if the patients eyes cannot distinguish one color from another. Other concerns include Strabismus and Amblyopia, also know and crossed or lazy eyes. This is a visual disorder in which the brain ignores input from an eye. There are other various diseases of the eye such as dry eye syndrome, macular degeneration, glaucoma, cataracts, keratinous, and retinal pathologies. These diseases can cause everything from mild discomfort to total blindness. With proper treatment and early detection the risks associated with these diseases of the eye can be greatly reduced. The complete list of things evaluated depends entirely on the eye care facility in which the actual eye examination takes place.
