Facing Cataracts - The True Story

June 05, 2014

Cataracts is a condition many of us know all to well. However understanding the impact it has on your vision and that there is help is something that is misunderstood. Cataracts can affect people for many different reasons. Knowing the symptoms of the condition will assist with early detection and in many cases save your vision.

Symptoms of Cataracts:

- Poor night vision
- Increasing light to read
- Fading colors or yellows
- Glare
- Increased sensitivity to sunlight glare
- Increased sensitivity to headlights
- Painless blurred vision

Cataracts can affect each person differently and though in age-related cases cataracts generally progresses slowly; patients with diabetes can have very rapid development of cataracts. Though the myth is that a cataract is a long progressive disease know one really can determine how fast it will progress from one person to the next. The best advice is to get checked regularly and if you are a diabetic being examined yearly is very important.
Risk Factors for Cataracts:

Though most of us a think cataract is an age related condition there are many other ways you can be affected by cataracts. Below are a few risk factors to consider:

- Family history of Cataracts
- Diabetes other medical conditions
- Eye injury
- Medications [ie steroids]
- Radiation
- Long term light [UV] exposure
- Previous eye surgeries
- Low diet enriched in antioxidants [vegetables and fruits]
Treatments for Cataracts:

In past years many doctors used a procedure that waits to remove the cataracts until the vision has been significantly reduced.

However now doctors like Dr. Boxer Wachler of the Boxer Wachler Vision Institute are using Natural lens Replacement to improve the vision of patients before cataracts rob their vision. When the very early stage of cataracts begin, usually in individuals in their 50's, the lens can be replaced. The benefit is patients have excellent distance and near vision and never need to worry about experiencing poor vision from cataract.
