A Peek at the Different Types of Contacts

April 14, 2013

Contacts have grown in popularity over the years; they are now one of the most widely used forms of eyewear due to the benefits they have over glasses. In general, contact lenses provide wearers with clearer vision and confidence, as they are virtually unnoticeable when worn. It may come as a surprise to most people, but there are actually many different types of contacts available on the market, each with their own pros and cons.

Disposable contacts continue to be a popular option, as they are inexpensive and come in a variety of style options. More permanent models do exist, however, and they are recommended for people that want long-term solutions.

Here is a list of the most common types of contacts, along with the benefits and drawbacks of each. Remember to consult with your optometrist before making a purchase, as they will be able to recommend a personalized selection for your vision needs:

The Pros and Cons of Contact Types

· Daily-wear Soft Lenses:These contacts provide excellent vision and take very little time to adapt to. They can be easily inserted and come in varying tint options. The downside to soft lenses is that they must be replaced regularly due to the potential for damage.

· Rigid Gas-permeable (RGP) Lenses:These are more durable than their soft counterparts. As such, they offer greater vision clarity and correct most vision problems. Likewise, they do last longer and allow oxygen to pass through to your cornea. Along with soft lenses, RGPs also come in extended versions that allow the wearer to leave them in all night. RGPs do take more time to adjust to. To experience the maximum benefit, they cannot be left out for long periods of time.

· Extended-wear Soft Contacts:These are essentially long-term versions of the daily-wear soft lenses. They can typically be worn for up to three months before needing to be replaced; your optometrist will prescribe a care plan and schedule.

· Multiple-tint Contacts:Multiple-tint contacts exist (handling tint, enhancing tint and opaque features), and each has its own benefits. Handling tint contacts are tinted just enough so that the wearer can easily install/remove and clean them. Enhancing tint lenses are designed to enhance the color of the wearer's eye. Opaque contacts work to actually change the color of your eye.

Contacts are a very common type of corrective eyewear and come in a wide variety. Your optometrist will likely recommend a certain type and brand of contact lenses based on your prescription and lifestyle.
