What Is the Risk of Getting Cataracts When You Have Diabetes?

March 15, 2013

For many with Diabetes there are a lot of adjustments that need to be made. The worries of having complications from your Diabetes may occupy your mind a lot. One of the conditions that we often hear about for those with Diabetes is Cataracts. The high glucose levels that people with Diabetes produce can cause problems of the eye. While it's important to understand what complications you can get from having Diabetes it is also important to know the risks of each.

Cataracts:

A Cataract is the clouding of the lens of your eye. Cataracts slowly cloud the vision over time. One of the eventual treatments for this condition is Cataract surgery. While it is a fairly common surgery many have difficulties with daily activities before it gets bad enough to need the Cataracts surgery.

Common Symptoms of Cataracts?

Pain in eye
Blurred Vision
Poor night vision
Frequent Prescription changes
Dry eye
Spots or Halos

There are several symptoms of Cataracts, but sometimes the slow nature of the developing Cataracts merely mask them. Eventual removal of the clouded lens is needed to restore quality of vision.
Keeping your eye care professional appointment to have your eyes fully examined at least once a year is important. This will ensure that the decline of vision is monitored and is not spreading too quickly. Those with Diabetes can have an increased rate of progression if sugar levels are uncontrolled. Additionally other complications of the eyes can form with Diabetic patients.

Risk Factors:

There are several risk factors for Cataracts and Diabetes alike. Knowing the risk factors can help you understand your personal risk of getting the condition. Below are a few risk factors for Cataracts.

Family history of early Cataracts, before the age of 60
Underlined Health Condition (ie. Diabetes)
Injury to the eye
Smoking
Environmental Conditions
Over the age of 60

Those with Diabetes have a much higher risk of developing Cataracts earlier than age 60, some research suggest 50% increased for developing before the age of 60. In addition those with Diabetes are more likely to have other conditions of the retina which can affect the vision.

It is important to have regular visits to your eye care professional. Letting them know all your risk factors not just for Cataracts but other conditions can help them diagnose them early and obtain the proper treatment. Conditions like hypertension, and early warning signs for Diabetic retinopathy can be found by having a simple eye exam.
