The Link Between Children's Vision and Learning

February 28, 2013

Get your child on the right path to successful learning by scheduling an eye exam today. As of the leading disabilities among school age children, most vision problems can be easily detected and corrected with regular eye exam visits.

Poor Vision and Learning

It is estimated that approximately 80 percent of all learning in schools is visual in nature, and if a child's eyesight is compromised, it can be a devastating blow to the child's success. With so much learning visually approached, children with vision problems can fall behind in their studies, leading to poor performance and behavioral issues. Children do not always vocalize their disabilities, so it is up to teachers and parents to determine the root of the child's problem. Regular eye exams can help determine the root of the problem and help strengthen a child's ability to learn and gather information.

See a Specialist

While schools do offer regular eye exams, these exams are not as comprehensive as an optometrist's eye exam, nor can they detect congenital disorders and the like. These screenings are limited at best, and can only vaguely determine if the child has 20/20 vision, or if there is a vision problem. They cannot determine the cause of visual disturbances and often can falsely reassure parents and teachers that there are no vision problems, when in fact there may be. Recent studies have shown that these regular school screenings detect about 5 percent of vision problems in the students they screen. Trust only a licensed professional to perform a comprehensive examination to determine your child's overall eye and vision health.

The Eyes Have It

Most vision problems simply deal with corrective disorders, such as farsightedness or nearsightedness. Prescription eyeglasses can be prescribed to correct these problems. They can also work as magnifiers, if the child's vision is not 20/20. These visual disturbances are the most common issues that plague students during class time. Eyeglasses can correct the issue and help the child read better. They can also help the child's focus on distance reading, making it easier to see the board.

Your child's eye health, as well as their success in school, is important, and all children, including teenagers, should be screened every year for vision changes. If your child plays sports, unintentional eye injury could lead to vision changes and problems in class. Make sure they have proper protective eye gear when playing sports and have their eyes examined regularly. Early detection on vision changes and disturbances can help children be successful in school, and beyond.
