Grow Up Strong -- Protect Vision and Eye Health

November 05, 2010

Ensure that your children will see well into the future by teaching them to care for and protect their eyes at an early age.

Start your children off early with good vision and eye-care habits, including having their eyes checked by a trained professional at regular intervals throughout childhood and beyond. This will allow for the detection and treatment of common eye problems such as:
  • Myopia: nearsightedness
  • Hyperopia: farsightedness
  • Astigmatism: irregularly shaped cornea or lens
  • Amblyopia: lazy eye
  • Strabismus: crossed eyes
Vision problems such as these affect 1 in 20 preschool-age children, and 1 in 4 school-age children. If undetected or untreated, eye problems can lead to permanent damage, which can hinder your child's mental and physical development. Children with uncorrected vision or eye health problems also face many difficulties academically, socially, and physically.

Fostering healthy eye-care habits in your kids will help ensure proper development and protection from conditions such as cataracts, glaucoma, and macular degeneration as well as accidents caused by poor vision. Frequent headaches or difficulty at school often can signify a vision problem that can easily be fixed with a pair of glasses.
